Mirror and Metaphor; Reconciling the Other
The Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture of Ted Fullerton.

September 16 – October 14, 2019
Reception: September 19, 7-9pm

The Campus gallery at Georgian College is pleased to start it’s fall 2019 season with the exhibition: Mirror and Metaphor; Reconciling the Other. The Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture of Ted Fullerton.

Over a 45-year career Ted Fullerton’s work has explored and investigated the duality of human nature, the rational and the illogical, the physical and the spiritual, the intellectual and the intuitive symbolically and with the human form. The symbolic nature of his work alludes and touches on archetypal images, iconography, Jungian psychology, classical mythology and allegory, primitive and modernist sculpture, art history, folklore and existentialism with contemporary connotations. Within his oeuvre the idea of Otherness and the notion of the Axis Mundi has preoccupied him with a range of symbolic motifs. His interest in “difference” and Axis Mundi is rooted in the idea of “connection” where there is no contradiction between the sense of “knowing” or “being”, where nature and human nature intersects as a paradigm for a collective and pantheistic model, a reconciliation of opposites and “the other”.

This exhibition comprised of selected drawings, printmaking, paintings and sculpture of artist Ted Fullerton scheduled for September – October 2019 in the Campus Gallery, Georgian College will be the first exhibition organized to exhibit the full range of mediums – together – that comprise his studio practice. It is intended to be a kind of meta-exhibition of how the pictorial and a sculptural language of the artist illustrates and reinforces a collective memory as well as human “duality” within a contemporary perspective – in the words of the artist – “by turning the gaze inward as mirror and metaphor.”
